The objective of this study is analyze the dynamics of land use and occupation transitions in Paragominas and Ulianópolis. Land use and land cover classes provided by the TerraClass Project for the years 2004, 2008, 2010 and 2012 were quantifi ed and mapped. The results indicate that much of the forest area was converted to agriculture and pasture. In Paragominas, the annual agriculture class presented in the year 2012 a 2.62% increase compared to 2004, from 1.19% to 3.81% in this period class nearly tripled its occupied area and much of the increase in agriculture was due to the advance of the areas of pasture (66%), secondary vegetation (14%) and forest (8%). Ulianópolis in the annual agriculture had its area more than doubled in 2012, from 2.81% in 2004 to 6.30% in 2012 and the increase was the advance of the areas of pasture (56%) and forest (17 %). It is concluded is that much of the forest area has been converted to secondary vegetation, annual crops and pasture. Of the total increase in the area of agriculture, 66% in Paragominas and 56% in Ulianópolis was originating pasture class. | Resumo | As mudanças de uso e cobertura da terra são apontadas por vários estudos como causadoras de danos ambientais à medida que a fl oresta é convertida a outros usos. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar as dinâmicas de transições de uso e ocupação da terra em Paragominas e Ulianópolis. Foram quantifi cadas e mapeadas classes de uso e cobertura da terra fornecidos pelo Projeto TerraClass para os anos de 2004, 2008, 2010 e 2012, posteriormente, foram efetuadas as análises das dinâmicas e realizadas comparações entre os mapeamentos. Os resultados apontaram que grande parte da área de fl oresta foi convertida para agricultura e pastagem. Em Paragominas, a agricultura anual apresentou no ano de 2012 um acréscimo de 2,62% em relação a 2004, passando de 1,19% para 3,81%, período em que a classe praticamente triplicou a sua área e grande parte do incremento na agricultura se deu sobre as áreas de pasto (66%), vegetação secundária (14%) e fl oresta (8%). Em Ulianópolis, a agricultura anual teve sua área mais que dobrada em 2012, passando de 2,81% em 2004 para 6,30% em 2012 e o incremento se deu pelo avanço sobre as áreas de pasto (56%) e fl oresta (17%). Conclui-se que grande parte das áreas de fl oresta foram convertidas para vegetação secundária, agricultura anual e pasto. Do total de incremento da área de agricultura, 66% em Paragominas e 56% em Ulianópolis, foi originário da classe de pasto. Portanto, as dinâmicas das classes estão baseadas na agricultura e pecuária como variáveis na matriz econômica dos municípios.
